Flying to Belfast, 1977
It was possible to laugh
as the engines whistled to the boil,
and wonder what the clouds looked like –
showelled snow, Apple Charlotte,
Tufty Tails…I enjoyed
the Irish Sea, the ships were faults
in a dark expanse of linen.
and the Belfast below, a radio
whit its back ripped off,
among the agricultural abstract
of the fields. Intricate,
neat and orderly. The windows
gleamed like drops of solder –
everything was wired up.
I tought of wedding presents,
white tea things
grouped on a dresser,
as we entered the cloud
and where nowhere –
a bride in a veil, laughing
at the sense of event, only
half afraid of an empty house
with its curtains boiling
from the bedroom window.

Fu possibile ridere
mentre i motori fischiavano nel ribollimento,
e chiedersi che aspetto avranno le nubi –
neve spalata, Apple Charlotte,
Tufty Tails…ho goduto
il Mare d’Irlanda, le navi erano difetti
in una buia distesa di lenzuola.
E poi Belfast di sotto, una radio
con tutto il dietro divelto,
tra l’astrazione agricola
dei campi. Intricata,
ordinata e sistemata con metodo. Le finestre
brillavano come gocce di fusibile –
tutto era elettricamente connesso.
Pensai ai regali di nozze,
cose bianche da tè,
raggruppate su una credenza,
mentre si entrava nella nube
e non si era in alcun luogo –
una sposa in velo, che rideva
del senso dell’evento, solo
semi impaurita da una casa vuota
con quel ribollimento delle tende
dalla finestra della camera da letto.
